Subject:
Metrosideros polymorpha Ohia dieback Hawaiʻi Island Ohia-lehua ecology
Summary:
The fungus, Phytophthora cinnamomi, was found to be widespread throughout the ohia lehua dieback zone on island of Hawaiʻi. Although Phytophthora cinnamomi appears to be the primary pathogenic agent in many disease complexes throughout the world, its inconsistent behavior in this study is "probably explained in terms of environmental changes". The role of the fungus related to the decline of ohia lehua is not fully understood and should be more fully investigated to include its association with other organisms that have been isolated.
