Summary:
This document describes a recommendation that was made by the Hawaii Audubon Society that three applications that were submitted for commercial development on Mauna Kea be deferred and that the Board of Land and Natural Resources develop an integrated Mauna Kea Master Plan regarding long-term and commercial use of Mauna Kea as well as the protection of Mauna Kea's unique and natural resources. The three applications that the society recommended be evaluated were with regard to the construction of an optical telescope and other observatory facilities on Mauna Kea, a construction camp at Hale Pohaku, and an access road that would run from Hale Pohaku to the summit. Also described are other projects that were under review such as the installation of utilities that would provide power to the summit, and a mid-elevation facility that would house astronomers who work at the summit. This action called for balanced planning that would benefit the public and would protect all land use on the summit of Mauna Kea.
