- Summary:
- Despite Hawaii being one of the most highly stratified societies in Oceania, the role of exchange in Hawaiian prehistory has never been critically assessed and has only received minimal attention. In addition, while volcanic glass assemblages from Hawaiian archaeological sites have been analyzed as artifacts for technological and use wear studies, as dating materials, and as materials for provenance, the latter remains undeveloped. Therefore, this paper demonstrates the utility of provenance studies of volcanic glass as a means of providing an empirical grounding to addressing exchange and interaction in Hawaiian prehistory.
