Western yellowjacket Vespula pensylvanica Wasps
Summary:
While the western yellowjacket, Vespula pensylvanica (Saussure), was first discovered on Kauai in 1919, this species did not reach the easternmost islands of Maui and Hawaii until 1978. However, since a subsequent population explosion raised concern regarding the impact that this wasp might have on Hawaiian arthropods, predation by the V. pensylvanica was studied at the Haleakala and Hawaii Volcanoes National Parks in Hawaii with the results reported here.
