Summary:
While there are many situations regarding high-altitude physiology where it would be useful to predict the barometric pressure from altitude, many attempts that were made to do so in the past fell into disrepute for various reasons. This article discusses the reasons for past disputes and shows how the use of the appropriate model atmospheres for the latitude and season can give accurate predictions for the barometric pressure-altitude relationship. This is done at latitudes that are within 30 degrees of the equator, where many of the highest mountains are located.
