Summary:
During this study, growth rates for Hawaiian island shield volcanoes were used to calculate mantle heat and mass flux, model the loading of oceanic crust, and place a volcano in its long-term eruptive setting for hazards analysis. Here, thirty-seven new K-Ar ages, from the West Maui volcano, were used to define the waning stages of shield growth and a brief episode of postshield volcanism.
