Vespula pensylvanica Wasps
Summary:
Prior to the late 1970's, the Vespula pensylvanica (Saussure) was restricted to the westernmost Hawaiian island of Kauai and Oahu were this species was found in 1919 and 1935, respectively. However, in 1978, invasions started to occur on the more easternmost islands of Hawaii and Maui. This was then followed by invasions that took place on the islands of Molokai and Lanai in 1979. As a result, the reproductive activities of V. pensylvanica (Saussure) were studied on the more recently invaded islands of Maui and Hawaii with some of the variability regarding the reproductive behavior of this wasp described here.
