Summary:
Within the area of the Island of Hawaii's 4030 square miles lie 5 mountains, 242 masses, Mauna Kea, 13,796 feet, Mauna Loa, 13,680 feet, Hualalai, 8,251 feet, Kohala, 5,505 feet and Kilauea, 4,090 feet above sea level. The large size and the great variation in altitude, combined with the other site factors, produce a wide variety of environment with a complex vegetation. It is the purpose of the writers to present a preliminary study of the vegetation of the island of Hawaii and the role of plant succession in the floral picture. The problem will be to present a classification of the natural plant formations, and then show the successional changes that take place on the new lava flows and on areas wholly or partially devegetated from other causes.
