In June, 1984, a Symposium regarding the Protection and Management of Terrestrial Hawaiian Ecosystems was held at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where attendees were asked to submit a list of specific and practical topics of the 10 "most-wanted" management actions to benefit terrestrial Hawaiian ecosystems. This document discusses the 10 most-wanted action items as follows: 1) identify and protect pristine Hawaiian ecosystems with diverse assemblages of organisms, 2) establish and manage Natural Area Reserves on Puu Waawaa Ranch, 3) develop an educational program on Hawaiian natural history for public schools, tourists, and the general public, 4) improve plant and animal quarantine procedures, 5) remove Mouflon sheep from Mauna Kea and to keep feral sheep and goats off the mountain, 6) strengthen and expand the state's endangered species program, 7) intensify feral pig control, 8) remove all restrictions on hunting alien animals on State-owned lands that is within the Conservation District P-subzone, 9) establish formal review of alien species release proposals among the islands, and 10) remove the axis deer on Maui.
