Summary:
This bulletin published in 1942 presents the results of a vegetation study of the range lands of the Territory of Hawaii. On the basis of this survey, together with available climatological data, a series of vegetation zones are described and provides a means of correlating the essential features of the environment with agricultural use. Ten zones and phases are described with information on climate, soils, and characteristic vegetation, both wild and planted species. The proposed division of agricultural areas into zones is intended primarily for use in the study and classification of pastures. However, because the pastured lands represent the remaining land of the Territory after the areas used for cultivated crops are taken out and include roughly one-fourth of the total area of the islands, the zones may be of general use to other phases of agriculture.
