Summary:
Two approaches in which to study the life history variation of plants that has been caused by succession is to: 1) compare the population dynamics or biomass allocation of plants of the same or closely related species that are growing in early succession habitats with those found in later stages of succession or, 2) to describe the effects of increased plant density or decreased nutrient availability that is based on the allocation of resources or population dynamics. This paper describes the differences in the population dynamics and dry matter allocation among the cohorts of mullein, Verbascum thapsus L, that was established during the first, second, and third years after major soil disturbance. In addition, the evidence of genetic variation among sequential cohorts of mullein that occupy the same sites is also described.
