Summary:
The authors report the first application of 40Ar/39Ar dating to a multikilometer-thick, essentially continuous sequence of Hawaiian shield basalts. The 40Ar/39Ar isochron ages of glass-poor groundmass samples are consistent with independently determined, long-term subsidence rates and stratigraphic order in all cases. The results indicate that the ~2.7-km-thick section of shield and postshield Mauna Kea basalts penetrated by HSDP-2 range in age from <200 to ~635 kyr.
