Volcanic ash, tuff, etc.
Summary:
Although the common association of silicified wood with siliceous volcanic ash is well known, the Hawaiian material is of special interest because it indicates that a much less siliceous tholeiitic basalt ash also serves as source of readily available silica. The silicified wood samples have been collected from the littoral cone, Puu o Mahana, about 2.5 miles northeast of Kalae, the southernmost point of the Island, and from a bed of ash on the southwest slope of Mauna Kea, 0.5 miles north of Kilohana Girl Scout Camp on the Saddle Road.
