- Summary:
- During the period of 18 - 20 April 1964 the authors covered nearly 500 miles on the island of Hawaii in search of as many of the Big Island's native and introduced birds as a three-day permit would allow. The California Quail, Ring-necked Pheasant, Amakihi, Palila, Akiapolaau, honeycreepers, Skylarks, Linnets, Leiothrix, and the White-eye birds were observed at the Pohakuloa State Park where an extensive open forest of Mamane and Naio trees existed on the flank of Mauna Kea. The red honey creepers, the Apapane, and the Iiwi were observed in the Ohia forests of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Hawaiian Hawk, Mutant Pheasant, Erckel's Francolin, Turkey and Peafowl were observed at Dillingham Ranch at Puuwaawaa. The Hawaiian Crow could not be found and the presence of the Japanese quail (or Coturnix), was only heard by its melodious song.
