Mauna Kea Adze Quarry Archaeological surveying Mauna Kea Hawaii antiquities
Summary:
This research focused on debitage assemblages from the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry on the Island of Hawaii. By observing the patterning of flakes, cores, and partially finished tools, it is possible to infer raw material procurement strategies and reduction sequences. The blank/preform and flake assemblages are analyzed to determine manufacturing techniques and core reduction strategies. Combined with these analyses, an experimental program was conducted to characterize the physical properties of the material available at the Quarry and predict what types of material would be preferred; another program was to make adze preforms by traditional methods and obtain a wealth of behavioral information on reduction strategies.
