Summary:
This document describes the dedication of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope that was followed by the dedication of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. These were the second and third telescopes to be dedicated on Mauna Kea that followed the dedication of an infrared telescope that was built by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. However, as Mauna Kea was being discovered by the world's scientific community, controversy began as the mayor of the island of Hawaii went on record as favoring a "go-slow" policy toward further scientific development as the mayor was concerned that development atop this once-pristine mountain might snowball out of control -- especially out of the control of the county of Hawaii.
