Summary:
This document describes the decision that was made by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to cut the funding of an outrigger telescopes project from their 2007 budget after facing a 20 billion-dollar shortfall. This was a controversial project that called for the construction of six 1.8-meter telescopes that would have surrounded two of the Keck Observatory's 10-meter telescopes that are located on the summit of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. The decision to not fund this project was described as "a sign of the difficulty of finding funding for fundamental science in the United States".
