Astronomical observatories Mauna Kea controversy
National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)
Outrigger Telescope Project
- Summary:
- This document describes the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's, (NASA), decision to build four to six outrigger telescopes that would surround two 10-meter Keck telescopes on Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii. However, it was felt that this controversial 50 million-dollar project was a snub in the face to the people of Hawaii as the EIS found that more than 30 years of telescope construction and astronomy activities on Mauna Kea had a significant and adverse impact on the cultural and environmental resources of this land that is sacred to the native Hawaiians. Astronomy activities was also found to have had a negative impact on the wekiu bug that is found only on Mauna Kea and is a candidate for federal listing as an endangered species.
