Summary:
While the Koa (Acacia koa) is considered the most valuable common native tree species in Hawaii, little information is available on the diseases of koa such as three heart and root rot fungi that are known as Phaeolus schweinitzii, Polyporus sulphureus, and Pleurotus ostreatus. In addition, little is known about the Armillaria mellea and the Ganoderma spp., that were also considered major factors that played a part in the deterioration of old-growth koa (Acacia koa) stands that occur on the island of Hawaii. Therefore, this is only the second report that describes the effect that P. schweinitzii has had on a hardwood.
