- Summary:
- This document describes an expedition where scientists were in search of a cave that local lore represented as being an underground lake with a siphon at the makai, (or toward the sea), end. During the surveys that were done over a period of three seasons, (March 2000, March 2001, and June 2002) scientists found and explored Hawaiian lava caves called ThisCave and ThatCave, (later named Kukaiau Cave), that are located in very old Mauna Kea volcanic rocks. These explorations were done during various water levels where evidence showed these caves are not simply lava tubes but instead are caves made up of a normal karstic feature that were modified and enlarged by accidental water erosion.
