Summary:
This is a report that is dated August, 1962, findings are listed that were obtained during a wildlife survey of the Mauna Kea Game Management Area. During this time, an attempt was made to count all animals, (bird and mammal, game and non-game), in an effort to determine the increase or decrease of the wildlife dating back to October, 1961. The result was a reduction in the number of sheep, feral pigs and goats that were counted. However, an increase in mamane (sophora chrysophylla), naio (myoporum sandwicense), and a regrowth in puakeawe (styphelis tameiameiae) as well as a number of young silversword plants were found growing along the protected shelf of Waiapahoehoe gulch at approximately the 10,000 foot elevation above Hilo. In addition, flocks of plover, feral male turkeys, white-eyes, amakihis, Pekin nightingales, California Valley quail, Indian Chukar partridges, two feral peacocks, ringnecked pheasants, feral pigeons, Hawaiian owls, a single Hawaiian hawk, a single dark-rumped petrel (uau), skylarks, iiwis, apapanes, and palilas were sited at various areas around Mauna Kea.
