Summary:
This document describes work that was done by Mr. E. D. Preston who made a complete series of pendulum, latitude, and magnetic observations at sea level, on the side of Mauna Kea and again at its summit in an effort to determine the specific gravity and weight of this mountain. Located on the island of Hawaii, the stations that were occupied were carefully connected with the triangulation of the Hawaiian Government Survey. This work followed the excellent results of the work that was done by Mr. Preston on Haleakala in 1887. Therefore, the American Academy of Sciences recommended that a similar series of observations be made on Mauna Kea. As a result, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey granted Mr. Preston a leave of absence for this purpose and loan the necessary instruments, while the trustees of the Bache fund applied its income to the same object. The Hawaiian Government Survey also contributed assistance in consideration of the value of this magnetic and latitude work.
