Summary:
While cinder cones are commonly found on the flanks of Mauna Kea in Hawaii and at Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, they generally occur in two types of volcanic provinces -- either upon the flanks of major volcanoes, or within relatively flat-lying volcanic fields. They also occur in platform cone fields such as those that are found in the San Francisco Mountain, the Ariz Paricutin region in Mexico, and the Nunivak Island in Alaska. This paper reports the results of a comparative geomorphological study of six terrestrial cone fields with the purpose being to: characterize statistically the structure of terrestrial cinder cones, to determine if the cone shape or spacing is uniquely associated with the type of volcanic province in which a cone field occurs, and to explore the volcanic processes that are responsible for the construction of the cinder cone fields.
