Endangered species Hawaii Island Habitat conservation
Summary:
This document describes the many plant and animal species that are vanishing from the high mountains and isolated valleys of Hawaii due to the number of alien species that have been introduced to the islands through various means. As a result, the survival of hundreds of endangered species now depends on human intervention. As a result, work crews have been killing feral animals, protecting fragile plants by erecting fences in an effort to keep ungulates from destroying these plants, breeding birds in captivity, pollinating flower by hand, and destroying non-indigenous plants. By doing so, conservationists hope to restore and maintain healthy ecosystems that will give Hawaii's native species the respite and protection that they need to survive.
