Summary:
This document describes the once abundant Mauna Kea silversword, (Argyroxiphium sandwicense ssp. sandwicense), and Mauna Loa silversword, (Argyroxiphium kauense), and the severe decline that these plant species suffered as a result of the introduction of alien ungulates that were brought to Hawaii by European voyagers in the late 1700s. In addition, these silversword species may also face serious indirect threats as alien insects, such as ants and wasps, could potentially decimate pollinators of these plants such as native bees and moths. However, through a public and private partnership that has occurred between the Volcano Rare Plant Facility, the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Hawaiian Silversword Foundation, the outlook for the recovery of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa silverswords has brightened.
