Summary:
Collected by the U.S. Exploring Expedition in 1840 or 1841, a specimen of Nuku puu, (Hemignathus lucidus Lichtenstein), is the first specimen evidence of this species that is shown to have come from the island of Hawaii. It is also likely the first evidence of probable sympatry of the H. lucidus with the Akiapolaau (H. wilsoni Rothschild). However, in studying the skull morphology of these species, there is evidence that indicates that these two species do not constitute a super species.
