- Summary:
- The Mauna Loa silversword, Argyroxiphium kauense Degener and I. Degener (Asteraceae), is one of Hawaii’s highest-profile endangered plants and exemplifies the challenges that confronts Hawaii’s endemic flora. Once prevalent in open mesic and wet ecosystems that are located between the 4920 and 8860 foot elevation on Mauna Loa Volcano, and possibly on Hualalai Volcano on the island of Hawaii, the Mauna Loa silversword has suffered a severe decline in distribution and abundance. Now limited to 3 small remnant populations that totals less than 700 plants, this has been the result of the impact that nonnative ungulates, such as goats, mouflon sheep, and pigs has had on its environment. As a result, this document describes an informal public and private partnership that was formed in an effort to reintroduce the Mauna Loa silversword on a large scale. This partnership includes the Volcano Rare Plant Facility, the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the National Park Service, the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as well as the Olaa -Kilauea Partnership and the Hawaiian Silversword Foundation whose goal is to reintroduce 20,000 to 25,000 plants into intact or restored native ecosystems in multiple protected sites across the historical range.
