Summary:
A standard method for marking and indentifying individual birds in behavioral, population, and survival studies, is through the use of colored leg bands. Used in conjunction with numbered aluminum bands, colored bands allow for the rapid identification of resighted or recaptured birds. This document describes the types of leg bands that are available for these studies and the wide range of colors that are available, in both, solid or split color. Also described are the pros and cons to each type of leg band with regard to those that are resistant to color fading or discoloration, the shades that could be confused with other colors, as well as how recognizable the various bands are under field conditions.
