Summary:
This document describes a conflict that developed between those who own and operate telescopes atop Mauna Kea and the native people of Hawaii regarding the serious inadequacies in protecting both the environment and the cultural landscape of the mountain. Also described are the events that took place at a meeting that was held regarding a Conservation District Use Application that was filed by the Institute for Astronomy which sought a permit to build six new telescopes on the mountain and a proposal that was presented by members of the Mauna Kea Anaina Hou and the Royal Order of Kamehameha I that would restore public involvement and protect the sacred resources of Mauna Kea as well as ensure that mitigation measures would be taken before further development would take place on the mountain.
