Summary:
This document describes Rick Warner's interest and his study of the breeding habits of the Palila that survives only in the limited area on the northwestern slope of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii where the mamane grows. He describes the discovery of a nest, the comings and goings of a pair of birds that protected the nest, the courtship feedings that occurred during the incubation period of the eggs, the eventual hatching of the eggs, the feeding of the young, and how a parent accompanied each young bird as they abandoned their nest. Mention is also made of a weakness of the species that is caused by the long period that occurs between the nest building and the departure of the nest by the young and how this may be a hindrance to its survival.
