Summary:
This document gives a brief overview of the archaeological resources that may be found in the Pohakuloa Training Area, (PTA), that is located on the island of Hawaii. This is the largest live-fire military training facility that exists in the Pacific region and outside of the continental United States. This report provides a general context for new investigations that were done of a large plateau that is known as the Saddle Region where the bases of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Mount Hualalai meet. While a considerable amount of archaeological work has been completed at PTA over the past few decades, efforts are ongoing to update the accumulated data and to summarize new directions for research. Issues such as overland transportation, the nature of temporary camps, and the procurement and processing of a variety of rare resources such as fine-grained basalt, volcanic glass, and many species of bird that were all found in this area that encompasses nearly 170 square miles, were investigated.
