Savannas Hawaii Island

- Summary:
- The purpose of this study was to characterize certain savannas with regard to uniqueness or similarity of the vegetation on the island of Hawaii. Possible relationships to other tropical areas or mid-latitude continental regions were also investigated. In order to meet these goals, sites were selected for physiognomic similarity of the vegetation and differences in the physical environments. Site 1 was 1.5 miles from the junction of the Saddle Road and the road to Mauna Kea and was located at the 7120 foot elevation. This site appeared to be physiognomically similar to many other savanna areas that consisted of grassland with scattered trees and also included the mamane (Sophora chrysophylla).
