Summary:
This document describes observations that were done of the Hawaii Akepa (Loxops coccineus), a Hawaiian honeycreeper with four recognized subspecies. While there was a growing concern for the survival of the endangered Hawaii Island race, (Loxops c. coccineus), that is limited to the upper elevation (ca. 1500-2200 meter) forests on the slopes of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai, little was reported on its ecology and behavior. As a result, this is a report of observations that were done on two nests of the Hawaii Akepa that were located at the edge of a wet, mature, ohia (Metrosideros collina) and koa (Acacia koa), rain forests, located on the Keauhou Ranch site, 15 kilometers north of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park headquarters.
