Hawaiian Dark-rumped Petrel Uau Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis
Summary:
The Dark-rumped Petrel, Uau, Uuau, or Uwau (Pterodroma Phaeopygia sandwichensis) has been known to nest on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Kauai, and Lanai in burrows and holes, located in moist regions, among the roots of trees generally at high elevations in the mountains. This document describes the physical attributes of the Uau and describes bird specimens that were collected or sighted in various areas around Hawaii from 1891 - 1939. Once existing in large numbers, it is feared there are now few left due to the hunting of these birds in addition to predators such as the mongoose, feral pigs, and feral cats.
