Summary:
Roadside plant communities on the windward slope of Mauna Loa volcano were sampled to survey the species diversity and characteristics. Overall diversity decreased with elevation. Introduced species were dominant on the fine-grained road-fill substrate, while native plant species dominant adjacent, recent lava flow substrates. Sixty-nine plant species were found in total and introduced plant species consist of 74% of the roadside flora. At elevations above 1000 m, temperate species gradually replaced those of tropical origin.
