Summary:
This document describes the dream of John T. Jefferies to build the University of Hawaii into a world-class center of astronomical research and to make Mauna Kea one of the great observatories of the world. Upon his urging, this lead to the construction of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, (CFHT), the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope, (UKIRT), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) of which the University of Hawaii was awarded the contract to build the IRTF. Also described are the difficult challenges and controversies that the project faced as a result of a cracked mirror and an initial design that did not work. However, a redesigned mount and a strong belief in this project lead to the success of the IRTF.
