Astronomical observatories Mauna Kea history
Kuiper, Gerard P., 1905-1973.
- Summary:
- This document describes how the completion of three telescopes in 1979 marked Mauna Kea's emergence as a major international center for both optical and infrared astronomy as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Infrared Telescope Facility, the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope brought astronomers "halfway to space". The construction of these three telescopes came after the University of Hawaii built the first big 88 inch telescope on Mauna Kea in 1970. Also described is the part that Gerard P. Kuiper played in the development of astronomy in Hawaii following his arrival in the United States from The Netherlands in 1933 and his eventual discovery of Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaii which he deemed "probably the best observing site in the world from which to study the moon, the planets, and the stars".
