Summary:
The report consists of the Draft National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination Form for the Mauna Kea Summit Plateau Shrine Complex. A total of twenty one dispersed and aggregated sites were recorded in the 1984 survey. All but one site were religious structures referred to as shrines or marae. The architectural characteristics of the newly recorded shrines and marae were the same as those on the north flank of the summit, thus indicating that a single coherent building tradition embodying shared religious beliefs and values, although not necessarily the same function or use. This present project was an outgrowth of a survey conducted above the 13,000 ft elevation on the north slope of Mauna Kea in 1982. The results of that survey, presented in a report titled Cultural Resources Reconnaissance of the Mauna Kea Summit Region, by Patrick C. McCoy and Holly McEldowney, indicated the existence of an unexpectedly large number of Hawaiian shrines and marae in this high altitude environment. Continued investigations of this area in 1984 were aimed at completing an inventory of the mountain adjoining the northern boundary of the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry. The strategy and methodology were the same as those employed in the 1982 fieldwork. The archaeological reconnaissance survey of c. 1,000 acres of land on the east-south flank of Mauna Kea adjoining the northern boundary of the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry was conducted in July 23-28, 1984 under the direction of Patrick C. McCoy and Paul L. Cleghorn.
