This document describes an expedition that was lead by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, from the United States Exploring Expedition, who made the first official scientific measurement of the latitude, longitude, and height of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea during a three-week period from December, 1840 - January, 1841. This was done as accurately as the technology of the time allowed. Also described are the challenges that this group faced as well as several explorers who attempted the same feat earlier on in the century.
