- This document describes the meaning of Mauna Kea, the first recorded ascent that was made to the summit by the Reverend Joseph Goodrich in as early as 1823, as well as ascents that were made by others, thereafter. Also described are the various routes that one might take when traveling to Mauna Kea as well as an ascent that was made by a party who chose to hike to the summit via the Humuula Sheep Station that is located at Parker Ranch, on the island of Hawaii.
