Summary:
This report includes a summary sketch of the 1975-76 project's research goals and strategy, field methods, and analytical results. In addition to determining the boundaries of the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the National Science Foundation funded research had three primary goals: 1) Assessing the place and importance of the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry in the socioeconomic structure of the island of Hawaii; 2) Developing a technological model of adze production, detailing manufacturing techniques, the continuum of stages of production, and patterning of activities on sites; and 3) Providing new data on typological changes in Hawaiian adz forms through time.
