Summary:
This document describes Mauna Kea, a place of mana that is sacred to the Hawaiian people. Located on the island of Hawaii, this dormant volcano is home to a rare alpine ecosystem that consists of lichen, mosses, ferns, spiders, centipedes, and the endangered wekiu bug. It is also a prime location for astronomical research due to its extremely dry atmosphere. This document describes the ways in which the Office of Mauna Kea Management sought to build bridges between the scientists, the environmentalists, and the Hawaiian community as misunderstandings evolved over the differing priorities of these groups.
