- Summary:
- This document describes a plan to build a $29 million Mauna Kea Astronomy Education (MKAE) facility on the campus of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. It was expected that this facility would have a significant beneficial impact on the economy of the island of Hawaiʻi through its construction phase and by generating 26 - 28 permanent employment opportunities as staff would be needed to oversee the operation of a state-of-the-art planetarium, interactive astronomy and Hawaiian cultural/natural history exhibits, gift shops, and a cafeteria. It was also felt that this facility would make East Hawaiʻi a more attractive destination for the tourists, astronomy-related conventions/conferences, and would indirectly help to "sell" UH Hilo as a prospective college for students, world-wide.
