Hawaiian Dark-rumped Petrel Uau Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis Sophora Chrysophylla Mamane
Summary:
This document describes a collection of species of the Hawaiian Dark-rumped Petrel (Pterodroma phaeopygia) and nesting sites that were found among the Mamane (Sophora chrysophylla) trees at the 9000 foot slopes of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii, in the steep slopes and cliffs on the walls of the crater of Haleakala on Maui, and in partly natural burrows beneath tree trunks in the west, forested region at the 3500-4000 foot elevation on the island of Molokai. The number of species collected in addition to the nesting areas that were found from 1907 - 1954 indicated that the petrels were possibly still be coming to high breed in areas around Hawaii, even though 50 years had elapsed since they were reported doing so.
