Summary:
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1992, the Newell's Shearwater or ʻAʻo (Fuffinus auricularis newelli), was a threatened procellariid that was known to breed on the Island of Kauai and Hawaii, and was suspected to breed on the other main Hawaiian islands. While it was thought to be extinct after 1894, a specimen was collected in 1954 on the island of Oahu and a breeding colony was found on the island of Kauai in 1967. As a result, the objectives of this study were to determine the presence and distribution of the Newell's Shearwater in the Puna district on the island of Hawaii in an effort to locate breeding colonies and to document colony attendance patterns.
