Archaeological surveying Mauna Kea Mauna Kea antiquities Mauna Kea Adzes Quarry Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA)
Summary:
Six archaeological sites and a number of find spots were identified in a reconnaissance of the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) waterline catchments at Hopukani, Waihu, and Liloe Springs, located between the c. 10,400- and 8,640- ft elevations in the western sector of the Mauna Kea Adze Quarry on the island of Hawaii. The results of this survey confirm earlier expectations of a significantly larger number and variety of sites in this part of the quarry. Recommendations, both general and site-specific, are made with respect to mitigating the adverse impacts of proposed changes in the waterline system on the cultural and environmental resources in the subject area.
