Submillimeter Array (SMA)
Summary:
This document describes a groundbreaking ceremony that took place in Hilo, Hawaii, on 28 October 2002 for the construction of a state-of-the-art operations facility for the Submillimeter Array (SMA), the world's first imaging array. This facility would support the operations of the array through which observations would be done in the submillimeter wavelengths and penetrate the dusty, obscure regions of space from the summit of Mauna Kea. This science would give astronomers new information about star formation both locally and at the distant edges of the universe.
