- Summary:
- On March 29-30, 2005 Pacific Consulting Services, Inc., staff archaeologist Patrick C. McCoy monitored mechanical excavations at four septic tank locations at the Mid-Level Facilities at Hale Pohaku. This report summarizes the archaeological monitoring activities that were performed and the findings. A brief history of previous archaeological investigations in the Hale Pohaku area has also been included to provide some context for the current project, which was undertaken by the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy on a voluntary basis since there were no known archaeological remains in the immediate vicinity of the septic tanks and no requirement by the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, and Historic Preservation Division for archaeological monitoring of the septic tank installation project. The septic tanks replaced existing cesspools and were located adjacent to the Common Area Building, Dormitory B, Dormitory C, and the Visitor Information Station.
