Summary:
Mauna Kea is one of five massive volcanoes that makes up the island of Hawaii. It is also the only high landmass in the central Pacific Ocean basin that has been glaciated. Since this offers a unique opportunity for scientists to obtain paleoclimatic information that is based on glacial-geologic data that is within a vast, largely oceanic region of the Earth, this article reports on detailed stratigraphic investigations and radiometric dating of the glacial deposits that are found on Mauna Kea.
