Summary:
Postglacial lava flows that were interstratified with thick locally derived sheets of tephra, cover approximately 27.5 square kilometers on the south slope of Mauna Kea volcano. Geologic studies that was done on the glaciated upper slopes of this volcano during the first half of the 20th Century indicate that most of the volcanics were erupted about 4500 years previously and overlie a regionally extensive paleosol that developed largely during the last glaciation.
